Shadows of the Past, an exploration of the plurality of cultural memory, is part of my doctoral research project at Hasselt University and PXL-MAD School of Arts in Hasselt, Belgium, which is funded by the Special Research Fund (BOF) of Hasselt University (BOF21DOC04).
Within this part of my research, I worked with historical jewellery from certain museum collections. The pieces were then 3D scanned, and digitally edited using various techniques to make some elements stand out and others fade into the background.
The intentions of this work are to create new aesthetic and emotional associations and to question the concept of reality by visualising the simultaneity of different versions of the world. If we look at historical objects whose bearers have long been forgotten, there is always some room for interpretation. The true function of the things is lost, and even if the objects still carry memories, it is impossible for us to decipher them all. Negating or emphasising certain details can distort our vision.
The rings shown here are all made of black glass and are based on a so-called “pope ring” (inventory number 1963/58) from the Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim (Germany).
